Black Lives Matter
Equity, the quality of being fair and impartial: equity of treatment, New Oxford American
Dictionary.
Equity is the word that has popped up in my mind the last 14 days.
I wish equity for all was a given but it is not. Skin color has been a marker for a
persons’ worth or lack thereof for too long. Persons of color have not been considered
worthy enough to properly police, protect, nor educate. WE ARE EQUAL. But we all do
not experience equality unless it is demanded. Thank you to everyone out in the streets
helping to effect change. It is time. It is past time.
At The Sharing Tree we strive for equity. How? By having every single Hudson and
Somerset student arrive on the first day of school with the same school supplies as
their peers; the supplies they need to succeed in their classroom. We are not teaching
and we are not at home helping with the students’ homework. But we want to make
sure our students have the crayons, pens, and markers they need to complete a poster
for a unit on the Civil War in 5th grade, a scientific calculator and graphing paper for
middle school math, the graphing calculator needed for high school calculus and
quality backpacks to carry their supplies. We attempt to provide those school supplies
and more for a simple reason: we don’t want economic insecurity to be an impediment
to learning. Education is a game changer for a students’ future. The Sharing Tree
supports all Hudson and Somerset students in achieving their goals and dreams. If
there is any way we can help make that happen, contact us. You can do it. We believe
in you.
